Floating Sculpture sits in a large pool of water in City Hall Plaza. The pool reflects the wide Texas sky, juxtaposing nature with the built environment. The red polyester spherical sculpture was first displayed in Central Park in New York City, NY. The two spheres float close together, like a mother and a child and are anchored to the bottom of the reflecting pool on swivel mounts to allow some freedom of movement. In 1974, Mrs. Stanley Marcus, a longtime leader in the Dallas arts community, arranged for the piece to be loaned to the Dallas Parks Department, and the piece was subsequently displayed in the Fair Park Lagoon in front of the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts. On March 11, 1978, the sculpture was dedicated in its current location in the reflecting pool in front of Dallas City Hall. The sculpture was dedicated to the memory of Mrs. Marcus, who sadly passed away the day before the dedication. The artist, Marta Pan, (1923 – 2008), a French sculptor, was born in Hungary. Much of her work incorporates natural forms, and Pan, who attended the dedication in Dallas, said of the piece, "I hope it will be a link between architecture and nature, between the City Hall building and the people of Dallas."
